100 Day Birthday Baby Party: Asian Tradition is Gaining Popularity in North America

After baby is born it is common nowadays to have a party to introduce relatives and friends to your baby. In Christian tradition such party is on the Christening day, in Jewish it is Brit Milah (circumcision) - most of the time it is a religious event. But lately with many ethnically mixed couples and non-religious in general, such traditional events are becoming less popular. Many couples still do want to have a party to celebrate birth of their baby. Asian tradition to celebrate 100 days of baby's birth is gaining traction.

Historically from Korea, 100 days has been an event for a family and friends. Idea was picked up in Hong Kong and spread into China. From Hong Kong an event came to Great Britain and from there to Canada and the US. The reason 100 days is liked by many couples is that it does not have a religious attachment. There is no particular symbolism behind number 100 either. It is just a cute idea since waiting till first birthday a bit too long and something like Brit, which is celebrated on 7th day usually, is a bit too early. Some people, who are into partying, will celebrate both Brit Milah and 100 days. At 1oo days mother has recovered from birth, baby got the eating/sleeping routine and can be awake for over an hour to flirt with new friends. Also, at 3 months mother is pumping milk which can give her some flexibility on eating and drinking and many moms get a chance to have a first sip of a wine for the past 12 months (remember, she couldn't drink when she was pregnant).

So how is the holiday usually celebrated? It could be very informal, at home in a BBQ style, especially if weather is permitting. Or it could be more formal, in the restaurant. Traditional Chinese restaurants could be a good choice because they offer set dinners for 10 people tables. Prices vary from $100 to $500 per table, averaging $200 per table not including alcohol. Great thing about Chinese restaurants is that meal is served with the green tea, which will substitute a need to drink a lot of alcohol. Green tea will save cash for hosts. Such set dinners always include 10 courses with one starter soup and dessert. So, it's not only fun, it is also well presented, unique and not expensive.

Concerning the gifts, if event is in the restaurant it is considered good tone to give a new parents cash as gift in addition to something for a baby. Cash suppose to be enough to cover invitee's dinner. If party is at home, a bottle of wine and a baby gift is usually a minimum. Of course a card should accompany any gift. Standard Birthday party is Ok as 100 days is a Birthday party, just celebrated on 100th day, not a first year.
100 days Birthday baby party is a great idea. When inviting people you don't need to explain much other than it is a party to celebrate an arrival of your baby and an occasion to introduce everyone to your baby.

  1. 100 day is a very symbolic event for Koreans. During the mid 20th century and the korean war babies life expectancies were less than 3 months. If babies were able to reach 100 days it was celebrated because they had a good chance for survival. This is the significance of this celebration not because 100 is a cute number.

  3. To the attention of the author : Thanks a lot for this interesting article. I am currently doing a research on the size of the baby gift market in Asia and would like to know the average number of gifts an Asian baby receives around its birth and the average price. I believe this should vary among countries also...I am not sure of you could help me but as you seem so familiar with the topic...Thanks so much in advance.
